CORGS Adventures!
This past Saturday my buddies and I attended CORGS in Columbus Ohio. For the unaware CORGS stands for Columbus Ohio Retro Gaming Society. It is one of the premier gaming events in the area.
The second we walked in I was blown away. So many booths and only so much cash in my pocket 😭. I’m seeing games that I didn’t even know existed, games I had spent months looking for, and systems that I wanted to drop my whole budget on.
If you’ve never been to a convention I HIGHLY recommend it! You’ll find some things there and see that the retro gaming community is as strong as ever!
So what did I leave CORGS with? Well you’re about to find out!
This is my proudest buy from CORG’s. I fancy myself a Mortal Kombat enthusiast, meaning I want to own EVERY Mortal Kombat game ever made, official or not. As I was circling the booths I came across one that was selling these SEGA Genesis hacks with custom boxes. Most of them were Streets of Rage 2 related hacks (which looked cool but I didn’t feel like buying them). But as I gazed over the merch some more I noticed the dimly lit Shao Kahn mask and my excitement levels were at an all-time high! For the unaware this hack includes the three hidden characters (Noob-Saibot, Smoke, & Jade) as well as the boss characters (Kintaro & Shao Kahn) as playable characters. On top of that a combo system is included as well as all the MK1 levels! It’s a fun game that was a must to add to my collection. Also *HOT TAKE ALERT* this cover beats out the official releases on the Genesis in the cool factor department.
For the low low price of $10 I am now the owner of the last Tony Hawk game I played as a kid. That’s right as a kid Project 8 was the last one in the series that I decided to play. The game was pretty meh in my opinion. The added Nail-The-Trick ability was cool, but in my opinion the game lacked what made me love THPS in the first place. The craziness. Trading in the craziness for a more grounded approach was probably due to Neversoft wanting to avoid going “stale” but it was a huge swing and a miss for me. Checking out the series in retrospect after Project 8, I got out at a good time.
More MK stuff! I added the case and manual for MK Trilogy to the collection (shoutout to teenage Chavy losing them). I’m a stickler for having games CIB (within reason price wise) so this purchase was a no brainer. As for Mythologies, this game is crap. I never played it as a kid (was too busy playing MK4). But I fired this up over the weekend and my lawd this game sucks ass. The controls were confusing and I couldn’t make it past the first level. Was it worth buying though?
I picked up these two PS2 games for a combined $12! Of course I’m always down to buy some sports games (and I want to see how a Konami sports games feels and looks). As for the Sonic Mega Collection +. It’s basically 6 games in 1 disc. That’s a good deal!
Lastly we have the PSX haul! Hydro Thunder is one of my favorite arcade racers of all time so grabbing the PSX port was a huge W for the weekend! Staying in the racing realm CTR was another must buy for me. Recently I’ve been playing Crash Bandicoot and I figured why not add this to the collection? It’s a ton of fun! And last but maybe least Duke Nukem Time To Kill. I played this game and the aiming was so bad I kept dying not just on the first level..but on the first wave of enemies. I’ll give it another try later this week and see if I can get better at it. If I don’t at least it has cool cover art!
